Here is an interesting statistic. The American Journal of Medicine reported that of the 14 most common symptoms; 74% of the diagnostic findings were unknown, 10% psychological and 16% organic. What does this mean? Of the 14 most common symptoms, 84% of them are beyond our understanding of science, as we know it. The 16% that is organic is only diagnosable because the illness has advanced to the level of detection with laboratory testing methods. My guess is that the16% was previously in the early non-detectable stages and part of the 84%. Over time as the disease progressed it too could then be diagnosed as something organic. In other words you go to the doctor with a symptom and he/she gives you a prescription for some drugs or takes out a body part. There is a one in six chance that was the right thing to do. Like playing Russian runlet with a revolver. How about this one? The British Medical Journal reported that only about 15% of medical interventions are supported by scientific evidence and only 1% of the articles in medical journals are scientifically sound. Do you see a relationship between these statistics? It appears that 15% of medical intervention supported with scientific evidence was also organic in origin. So the only time medical intervention is supported is after the disease has advanced to chronic levels. Most of the time they only know what is really going on after it is too late. Hindsight is always 20/20.
I wonder what happened to the 85% who got some ‘medical intervention’ not supported by scientific evidence? Maybe this next statistic can help us answer that question. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that there are at least 225,000 deaths per year from the effects of medical error and adverse affects of medical intervention. According to the report these estimates were conservative and could realistically be as high as 284,000 deaths per year. Even at 225,000 this makes medical intervention the third leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease and cancer. Did you know this? How come this information is not in the news? Lets put this into perspective. This would be equivalent to 2 jumbo jet crashes every day! I remember when 2 planes crashed in one day in New York; it changed the world. All the planes were grounded because no one knew if it was safe to fly. This measure was extreme but it did reduce the number of deaths related to flying.
If we close down the hospitals would the number of deaths related to medical intervention reduce? Let’s look at some history and see. In 1973 the doctors in Israel went on strike for a month and the death rate went down 50% during that month. In 1976 the doctors in Los Angeles County went on strike and the death rate went down 18%. As soon as the strike was over the death rate went right back up to where it was before the strike. Also in 1976 the doctors in Bogotá, Colombia went on strike for 52 days except for emergency care and the death rate went down 35%. In March 2000 the Israel Medical Association started a program that reduced outpatient visits and cancelled or postponed many elective operations. As a result the June 2000 edition of the British Medical Journal reported, “Death rates have dropped considerably in most of the country since physicians in public hospitals implemented a program of sanctions 3 months ago.”
I am not suggesting that we shut down hospitals, at least not completely. I do suggest that you hold medical science more accountable for it’s actions. Is a one in six chance that medical intervention will be appropriate acceptable to you? If not then I recommend you become proactive instead of reactive.
The best way to play the medical intervention game is by not playing. Do things to stay healthy instead of just avoiding disease. I have yet to see an improvement on the original design of the human body.
