INTO THE MOUTH OF BABES - ADD and ADHD

Before I write an article on a specific subject I research and learn as much about the topic as I can. I then take the information, currently available from the scientific community, and view it with my philosophy of health. What I continually see is a flawed paradigm with regards to health and disease. Our society and most medical researchers consider illness as something the body is doing wrong and can only be corrected with the help of man’s intellect. As you know, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease,” so all the attention goes to the area with symptoms and the use of therapies to stop the process. Most often the story people have made up about their current health condition has no relevance to what is really creating their suffering. So therefore any attempt to intervene in a process that is way beyond our understanding just creates more problems. Maybe this is why doctors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S. Too much attention on using some external intervention like drugs and surgery and not enough attention on releasing the healing ability of the body. What I have noticed is that in general people prefer to continue to do unhealthy things, then cover up and/or suppress the symptoms with drugs, potions and lotions, and when their health gets bad enough to interfere with their unhappy life, they hope a doctor will cure it. People will try every other possibility first to avoid having to change their behavior. The body never makes a mistake, it is always making the best choices available based upon it’s inner and outer environments. The key is to work with the healing force within each individual so that they can start making healthier choices concerning all aspects of their life.

I find Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to be an interesting condition because the diagnosis and thus its existence are completely dependent upon behavior. It is a psychiatric diagnosis with no biological causation. In fact no mental disorder has a biologically defined origin. This specific disorder was first identified in 1902 when a doctor observed 43 children with aggression, emotionality, limited sustained attention, and defiant behavior. From the 1930’s to 1950’s this condition was called “minimal brain disorder” even though there was no evidence of brain damage. In the late 1950’s the hyperactive symptoms started getting more of the attention so they started calling it "hyper-kinetic reaction of childhood."  In the 1970’s researchers felt that the inattentive behavior was central to this disorder so it was then officially called “attention deficit disorder” or ADD. In the 1980’s and 1990’s both the inattention and hyperactive components started getting equal attention so the current name, “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” (ADHD) was born. Can you see how there is no such thing as ADHD or any other disease entity for that matter? These are just labels put on a set of symptoms that best suits the needs of the current situation. Would you rather have arthritis or stiff and sore joints?

In the medical field the diagnosis is an integral part to bringing something to life. It defines a group of symptoms as a real life entity that can then be attacked and defeated with the marvels of medical science. But most importantly, the diagnosis is the cornerstone of the insurance industry because it determines how much money will be paid out, based upon the severity of ones condition, defined by the diagnosis. Oh by the way, with the invention of managed care, the HMO doctors are paid based upon the diagnosis too. What we have here is another example of how man tries to control nature by defining the body’s innate expression in the form of a diagnosis. This helps to support the illusion that we can control disease and live happily ever after without any regard to taking responsibility for our choices. The only way to help avoid disease is through your own behavior.

I remember seeing a segment on Debra Duncan about ADHD. The only therapy suggested for these children were drugs and counseling. I suppose this limited thinking would make sense if you believe the medical research that says ADHD has no known cause. But there is strong clinical evidence that says hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is a primary cause. After a person’s blood and brain sugar crashes then stress hormones like adrenalin and nor-adrenalin come surging in to compensate. This over stimulates their neurotransmitters and causes ADHD type behavior. Sensitivity to artificial flavorings, colorings and preservatives is big contributor along with malnutrition from lack of minerals and vitamins and from eating junk food. What does all these causations have in common? Lifestyle. ADHD is just another “diagnosed” entity with the same prognosis as most other diseases.

Here is a list of the top ten categories of diseases (which includes ADHD) that cause death and disability in this country and you will see that they are all related to lifestyle and preventable by changing ones behavior: Heart disease, cancers, mental disorders, diabetes, arthritis, obesity, hypoglycemia and hypothyroidism. If you have a child or yourself have been “diagnosed” with ADHD, have you tried a diet consisting of no refined sugars, artificial flavoring, low in starchy carbohydrates with the right balance of healthy fats and protein? This is basically the same dietary recommendations I would give to anyone wanting to be healthier. There is no mystery here. It is just harder to motivate a child to adopt a healthier lifestyle, so making these healthy choices has to start with the parent. But unfortunately most adult themselves will not follow these guidelines, even after getting seriously ill. The reality is that most people eat a very unhealthy diet and take recreational and medical drugs to feel better. The choice someone makes to put a child on Ritalin is the same reasoning as taking an aspirin for a headache. By the way, the Mountain View Medical Center, a facility that specializes in children with behavior disorders, did a research study that gave no dietary advice and used Mighty Mins (a supplement we sell in our office) as the only means of therapeutic intervention. Every child who entered the study who was on drugs was able to stop the drugs during the course of the study. By the way, Flintstones multivitamin, made by Bayer and rated #1 pediatricians’ choice, contains artificial flavoring, sugar, aspartame and food coloring red, yellow and blue…Nice.

For you and your family to avoid the health disasters of our society and the health care system the best health insurance is prevention; eating healthy, exercise and keeping your nervous system free of interference with NSA care. If you say your lifestyle does not allow you to take these action steps then maybe it is your life that doesn’t work. The good news is these action steps will correct that as well. Call our office and we can tell you the best way to accomplish this.

P.S. All the kids involved in the school shootings across America were on prescription drugs and/or were under psychiatric therapy.
